Owning a firearm is both a cherished right and a serious responsibility. As proud defenders of the Second Amendment, we know that responsible gun ownership goes hand-in-hand with informed and intentional safe firearm storage practices. Properly securing your firearms isn’t just about checking a box—it’s about protecting your family, honoring your rights, and keeping our communities safe.

Why Safe Firearm Storage Matters

Accidental shootings, unauthorized access, and theft are all preventable outcomes when firearms are properly stored. Whether you’re a first-time gun owner or a seasoned shooter, the risks of negligent storage are very real—and avoidable.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has led the charge with its Project ChildSafe campaign, distributing millions of free safety kits and raising awareness about safe storage practices.

A secure firearm is a responsible firearm—and the first step in defending your home without endangering those inside it.

Firearm Safety Starts with These Four Rules

Based on guidance from the NSSF and the National Rifle Association, here are four rules that every gun owner must internalize:

  1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.
  3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
  4. Know your target—and what’s beyond it.

These rules may seem simple, but they save lives. Review them regularly with anyone in your household who may come into contact with a firearm.

Best Practices for Safe Firearm Storage

1. Choose the Right Storage Device

Not all safes and locks are created equal. The best option depends on your firearm type and household setup:

  • Gun Safes offer full-size protection for rifles and shotguns, with fire and theft resistance.
  • Lockboxes are ideal for securing handguns discreetly, including in cars.
  • Cable and Trigger Locks provide an extra layer of safety, rendering the firearm temporarily inoperable.

2. Keep Ammunition Separate

A best practice is to store ammunition in a different locked location. This not only reduces the risk of accidents, but also ensures another safeguard against misuse.

3. Talk to Your Family

Education is just as critical as a lock. The NRA’s Eddie Eagle Program teaches kids to “Stop. Don’t Touch. Run Away. Tell a Grown-Up.” You can start this conversation today—because knowledge is protection.

4. Reevaluate as Your Life Changes

New family member? Moving homes? Hosting guests? These are all triggers (no pun intended) to review your storage setup.

What New York Law Requires: NY Penal Law § 265.45

New Yorkers have a legal duty to store firearms securely under Penal Law § 265.45. Here’s what the law says:

If you live with someone who is:

  • Under 18 years of age, or
  • Prohibited from possessing firearms under federal or state law

…then your firearms must be locked in a secure storage container or equipped with a locking device whenever they are not in your immediate possession.

Additionally, you cannot leave a firearm in a vehicle unless it is:

  • Unloaded, and
  • Locked in a secure container out of sight (a glovebox does not qualify).

Failure to comply with these safe firearm storage rules is a Class A misdemeanor—with up to 1 year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
